So while purchasing make sure that the breed comes from nearly same environmental condition to which you are going to keep them in.

How to select dairy cows ?
It is an art to choose one’s cattle just by seeing and going through its pedigree history and physical features is an art. In order to tract pedigree a dairy farmer should practice building his own herd just by interbreeding within it.
Milk producing ability and pedigree are the first thing a dairy farmer should look whenever he or she considers of buying a cattle from a local cattle fair. Organized farms generally maintain a pedigree sheet with complete history of the cattle along with its parents . The best time for purchasing one is during the months of October and November. Cattle bought should be docile in nature and also should let anybody to milk it.
Selection should be carried out within the first or second lactation since maximum yield is observed till the first five lactation and two months after calving .If possible cows should be milked or should rely on milking charts for checking the production quality and quantity for a particular pedigree to assess the breed before buying. Keep in mind that maximum yield can be notice for the first ninety days of lactation.
Physical features of high yielding dairy cows :
1. Their body should be triangular(wedge) shaped in appearance .
2. Bright eyes and lean neck should be checked by buyers before buying.
3. Superior breed can be identified by seeing their carriage, physical vigourity , feminity ,etc.
4. Well placed teats present in all four quarters of the udder must be marked.
5. The underline skin of the cattle udder should have good network of blood vessels and must be well attached to the abdomen.
